The technique of Thai massage is based on the concept of invisible energy lines running along the body. The energy along these lines powers all our physical, mental and emotional processes.

Unlike Western massage, the Thai method, combined with spectacular technique, uses pressure, muscle stretching and compression, practiced in gentle, rhythmic, rocking movements.

By pressing on the body's energy meridians, Thai massage releases the sluggish flow of blood and build-up of toxins that gather in tired or overworked muscles. Close body contact allows the masseur to hold, for example, the ankle in two hands, easing it away from the hips while pressing deep with his foot into muscles in the inner thigh. Such postures stretch the tendons and ligaments while making the body more supple, realigning it and releasing tension. It's always performed on an individual basis; that is, the massage adjusts to the person's body. Skilled therapists always start by softly squeezing the limbs with the palms of their hands in order to warm up the body and listen to its needs.

This massage has a healing effect and it helps achieve the following:

  • Relieves pain and muscle tension
  • Strengthens and rejuvenates the body
  • Improves blood and lymphatic circulation
  • Frees blocked energy flows
  • Increases flexibility through passive yoga postures
  • Increases ability to absorb food
  • Enhances elimination of wastes and toxins
  • Invigorates the nervous system
  • Facilitates relaxation

Thai massage is especially helpful in relieving certain specific ailments including headaches, migraines, arthritis, whiplash pain, paralysis, numbness, sciatica and back pain.

Note: It is vital to only have a Thai massage performed by a fully qualified masseur. It is important to note the following:

  • People with serious heart conditions, high blood pressure or cancer shouldn't try Thai massage.
  • Thai massage is unsuitable for those suffering from brittle bones (osteoporosis), a condition that especially tends to occur among elderly women.
  • People with artificial joints, such as a knee or hip replacements, should never receive Thai massage.
  • Thai massage should never be given on areas of the body that are affected by skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or shingles.
  • Pregnant women should not allow massage of the belly after the third month of pregnancy.
  • Varicose veins should not be deeply massaged.
  • A person who is unsure of their physical condition or general health should avoid Thai massage.
